3D Secure (3DS) is an extra identity check to prevent card fraud. 3DS can appear on any credit card charges, including one-time purchases and recurring payments on saved cards. 3DS is required by banks, not Mariana Tek, in certain countries.
3DS could appear in two locations:
On Session: When a customer is actively purchasing a membership or credit package on the buy page.
Off Session: Membership renewal fees
Penalty fees are considered as off session. At this time, 3DS is not presented for penalty fees.
On Session
Buy Page
During checkout on the buy page, customers could receive a prompt like the following. The prompt is specific to the customer's bank. The customer will need to insert the passcode sent to their phone via text message/push notification before the transaction can be completed.
This is available on your studio's website and mobile app.
Off Session
Membership Renewal
If the bank is requesting 3DS Authentication for a membership renewal, the customer will be prompted to authenticate when opening your studio's mobile app.
Clicking Continue will take the customer to their cart with the last membership renewal pre-loaded and run them through the 3DS authentication.
If the authentication is successful, any outstanding failed payments will retry in the background.
Re-authentication is only available on the latest version of the mobile app, not your studio's website. Click here to view the full flow on the mobile app.
Penalty Fees
Your bank may require authentication to process a penalty fee. At this time, we do not have a prompt to complete authentication for fees. This will result in a declined credit card charge. Our team is working on improving this experience.
Point of Sale
3DS does not occur when checking out through the POS. If a customer experiences a payment failure due to not being authenticated, any transaction at the POS will return the following error.
To resolve, the customer will need to access the mobile app and authenticate their credit card.
Apple Pay
If a purchase is made using a card saved through Apple Pay, 3DS will not be required, as Apple has built-in security, which is considered equivalent to 3DS authentication
